Italian (characteristic of the region around Rome): from the Latin name Rōmulus, borne by one of the legendary founders of the Roman state. According to the legend, Romulus won a competition with his twin brother Remus to name and rule over the city which they had founded. In fact the derivation is the other way about, and Rōmulus comes from Rōma Rome, itself of uncertain origin. The Romans themselves often connected it with Greek rhōmē strength, but this is no more than a folk etymology.
Feminine form: Romola (the name of the heroine of a novel by George Eliot, set in 15th-century Florence).
